Choosing Between Projection & LED

The display is the centrepiece of any home cinema. Today, two technologies dominate the high-end market: laser projection and direct-view LED (including MicroLED and premium OLED). Each has distinct strengths, and the right choice depends on your room, your content, and your priorities.

Projection: The Cinematic Scale Nothing matches the scale of a projected image. A 150-inch or larger screen fills your peripheral vision, creating the immersive "theatre" feeling that smaller displays cannot replicate. Modern laser projectors from Sony, JVC, and Barco deliver stunning contrast, wide colour gamuts (BT.2020 coverage), and brightness levels exceeding 3,000 lumens — enough for HDR content in a properly darkened room.

LED & OLED: Pixel-Perfect Precision Direct-view displays offer per-pixel light control, meaning true black — not "very dark grey." OLED panels excel in smaller rooms where screen sizes of 77–97 inches are sufficient. For larger installations, MicroLED walls (Samsung The Wall, Sony Crystal LED) offer modular, bezel-free displays that scale to any size with perfect uniformity and infinite contrast.

Ambient Light Rejection If your cinema room cannot be fully darkened, ambient light rejection (ALR) screens paired with ultra-short-throw (UST) projectors offer a compelling middle ground. These screens reject light from above and sides while preserving the projected image.

Resolution & Viewing Distance At typical home cinema viewing distances (1.5× screen width), native 4K resolution is essential. 8K offers marginal benefit for most installations. More important than pixel count is the projector's or display's contrast ratio and colour accuracy — these determine perceived image quality far more than resolution alone.

Our Recommendation For dedicated, light-controlled cinema rooms, we typically recommend laser projection for the immersive scale it delivers. For multi-purpose media rooms or spaces where ambient light is unavoidable, premium LED displays are the pragmatic choice. In either case, professional ISF calibration ensures the display performs to its full potential.
