Standing Waves & Room Modes In any enclosed space, low-frequency sound waves bounce between parallel surfaces, creating standing waves. At certain points in the room, bass frequencies cancel out (null points) while at others they pile up (peaks). This is why the same subwoofer can sound boomy in one corner and thin in another. Professional acoustic analysis identifies these modes and guides treatment placement.

Absorption vs. Diffusion Absorption panels — typically dense mineral wool or fibreglass wrapped in acoustically transparent fabric — tame reflections and reduce reverberation time (RT60). But over-treating a room creates a "dead" sound that feels unnatural. Diffusion panels scatter sound energy without removing it, maintaining the room's liveliness while controlling flutter echoes.

The First Reflection Points The most critical treatment locations are the first reflection points — the spots on walls, ceiling, and floor where sound from the speakers bounces once before reaching the listener. Treating these points with absorptive panels dramatically improves stereo imaging and dialogue clarity.

Bass Management Low frequencies are the hardest to control. Corner bass traps — large absorbers placed in room corners where bass energy naturally accumulates — are essential in any serious cinema room. Membrane absorbers and Helmholtz resonators offer targeted treatment for specific problem frequencies.
